Premier League: Matchday 3 Betting Odds and Predictions

After a Monday Night Football contest that saw a 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Wolverhampton, Matchday 2 would officially come to an end. For Wolves, Ruben Neves would score the equalizer goal, and then Red Devils’ Paul Pogba would have a chance to win the match on a penalty kick. Unfortunately for United, Pogba would miss the goal and each club would take a league point in a thriller.

Saturday was when everything began, and we would see both Liverpool and Arsenal get their second victory to get off to a hot 2-0-0 start, while Manchester City would lose out on two points because of massive controversy. Tied 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur, Citizens would score in the final minutes of the match, but VAR would reverse the call after a handball would be revealed.

Sunday would bring a competitive match between Chelsea and Leicester City at Stamford Bridge, and it would also be the home debut of Christian Pulisic. When the smoke cleared, the Blues would still end up without a victory in a 1-1 draw against the Foxes to begin their campaign with a record of 0-1-1.

Here is the full list of scores from English Premier League Matchday 2:

SATURDAY, AUGUST 17

  • Arsenal 2, Burnley 1
  • AFC Bourenmouth 2, Aston Villa 1
  • Brighton 1, West Ham Utd 1
  • Everton 1, Watford 0
  • Norwich City 3, Newcastle Utd 1
  • Liverpool 2, Southampton 1
  • Manchester City 2, Tottenham 2

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18

  • Sheffield United 1, Crystal Palace 0
  • Chelsea 1, Leicester City 1

MONDAY, AUGUST 19

  • Manchester United 1, Wolverhampton 1

Wolverhampton Works Their Magic Again

After Anthony Martial would score a goal to put Manchester United ahead 1-0 in the first half, and with the way the Red Devils were dominating possession, it looked like they were on their way to ending their bad luck against Wolverhampton. Instead, Joao Moutinho would pass to Ruben Neves out of a corner kick, and Neves would take advantage of the space and hit a beautiful goal to tie it up with Man United.

Not much longer after, Paul Pogba would be given a penalty kick to take the lead for Manchester United, but Wolves’ Rui Patricio would play hero to embarrass Pogba (and my Red Devils) in the tabloids. As a result, we would end up with the 1-1 draw in one of the most exciting matches of the week.

Chelsea Still Unable to Get It Together

In total, Chelsea has played three matches to begin the 2019-20 campaign, and this includes two Premier League matches and a showdown against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup. Well, three matches for the Blues, and not a single win to brag about in a stretch where “The Pride of London” just can’t seem to get it together.

Sunday would be their latest poor showing, drawing 1-1 against Leicester City, and to be honest, they were lucky that they didn’t suffer a loss in this match. In the second half in particular, the Foxes would really get after the Pensioners and strike with a header from Wilfred Ndidi after a corner kick — the goal would even the game after Mason Mount’s score for Chelsea. If luck would have gone Leicester’s way a bit more, they would have ended up winning the match with the multiple opportunities they had near the end of the 90 minutes.

As far as American Christian Pulisic is concerned, he would start the game and have a decent showing, but he would eventually be taken out of the match in the 71st minute.

In their first three games of the season, the Blues have been horrendous, especially on the defensive side, allowing seven goals total. And it’s very clear that their defensive third is lacking something serious, and it needs to be cleaned up quickly or things will continue to be bad for the Blues. Needless to say, manager Frank Lampard has a bit of work to do.

Var Forces Manchester City in a Draw, Rather Than a Victory

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur would have a competitive match from start to finish that would eventually end up in a 2-2 draw, and one point for both clubs on the table. But a lot of City fans are crying foul, especially after VAR hit their luck again.

Last season in the Champions League quarterfinals, VAR would give Citizens their first taste of frustration after it would help them get eliminated from the tournament — and it would be to Spurs that time as well. On Saturday, it would be deja vu for City as VAR would once again do its thing to call off a goal. After Gabriel Jesus appeared to score the game-winning goal, it was then reversed after it was exposed that Aymeric Laporte would handball, and to make it even more dramatic, this all happened in added time.

Just an insane game with a crazy finish.

It’s Not Like He Debuted for Arsenal or Anything

Everything is going smoothly for Arsenal to begin the season, getting a 2-1 win over Burnley to start us off on Saturday. The victory now has their mark at 2-0-0 to kick off the campaign. The reason that’s so significant is because this hasn’t happened in a decade, where the Gunners would win in their first two league matches of the season.

One of the big parts for the success is Arsenal bringing in Dani Ceballos (on loan) from Real Madrid. Formally out of Real Betis, Ceballos has been very effective for the Gunners to begin with his time with the club. In the match against the Clarets, he would help set up Arsenal’s first goal, and then would grab the assist on the second score — Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would have the two goals.

Here’s the second score, where Ceballos would highlight superb defensive play (and he’s not exactly known for his defense) knocking the ball to Aubameyang, and the Arsenal star would then take it from there:

Liverpool Manages to Escape With a Victory

Alisson being out for Liverpool has created a bit of chaos for the Reds at the goalkeeper position. Adrian would again get the start for the club, but he’s also in injury limbo after getting attacked by a fan in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup victory against Chelsea.

To start out the match, Liverpool would hit two goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, and it looked like it was smooth sailing for the Reds. For the Mane goal in particular, it was a thing of beauty.

However, things would get a bit tense for Liverpool near the end of the match, and this would be after Southampton would bring themselves one score closer to the Reds after Danny Ings would hit a goal — and not just any goal — it would come in absolute insanity after a huge mistake from Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian.

Afterwards, things nearly got worse for LFC after the Saints almost hit yet another goal to tie up the match, but fortunately for Liverpool, they were able to hold on to a 2-1 win to grab the full three points for their table tally.

Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki Is Blazing to Start out the Season

Norwich City would roll all over Newcastle United to grab a 3-1 victory, and it would be thanks to Teemu Pukki and his hat-trick three goals. Competing to stay out of the relegation zone and receive a Premier League payday, the Canaries have gotten off to a great start to gain safety with the 40-point threshold.

For the Magpies, the beginning of their campaign has been dismal. After the loss to Norwich City, they would drop to 0-0-2 to kick off the season, and with how poor their play has been, it’s looking like Newcastle United is a serious option to be relegated. The defense has been horrible, they have no striking whatsoever, it’s just been bad all around for the Magpies.

For Norwich City and Teemu Pukki, on the other hand, it’s been fantastic football.

Last weekend’s Premier League Matchday 2 slate would bring me a 4-4-2 record — not the best, but it’s still a winning tally, regardless. Overall, my betting prediction record is now 10-6-4 through the first two weeks of the season. As far as my fantasy EPL team is concerned, I would suffer some woes there as well, with Georgia United F.C. taking our first defeat of the season to drop us to 1-0-1, however, my club is still listed in the top four of the league table with a total of five points — now I have the task of taking out a 2-0-0 team this week for Matchday 3. (Lucky me)

Also, with the kick off of the 2019-20 Italian Serie A season this weekend, be sure to check out my season preview and betting predictions for who the champions of the league will be, as well as my long shot to ride with for a major payday.

English Premier League Matchday 2 Betting Predictions

Aston Villa (+224) vs. Everton (+129) (Draw: +258) (O/U: 2.5)

  • (Friday, August 23, 3:00 PM Et) (Tv: NBCSN)

ANALYSIS: Aston Villa and Everton haven’t played each other in the English Premier League in three years, so this will be an interesting match due to the lack of history. In their last meeting against one another, the Toffees would take a dominating 3-1 road win over the Villans. With that being said, you can be sure that Aston Villa is craving for revenge to avenge Villa Park.

Despite investing a lot of money into the team over the offseason, the Lions have been struggling to begin their 2019-20 campaign. They head into this weekend fresh off of repeat losses to Tottenham Hotspur and AFC Bournemouth.

For Everton, they seem to have gotten things back on track after securing a 1-0 win over Watford for their first victory of the season.

The match may be at Aston Villa’s Villa Park, and the Claret & Blue Army may be wanting revenge against the Toffees, but I’m just not seeing it. Everton is in much better form at the moment. I do have AVFC making it a game, but the Blues ultimately take the one-goal win.

BETTING PREDICTION: Everton 2, Aston Villa 1

Norwich City (+334) vs. Chelsea (-121) (Draw: +303) (O/U: 3)

  • (Saturday, August 24, 7:30 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSN)

ANALYSIS: With how good Norwich City has looked to start out the season, and with how poor Chelsea has been, this is sure to be an interesting match at Carrow Road.

After getting destroyed by Liverpool, 4-1, in Matchday 1, the Canaries would then go out in the second week and avenge that loss with a 3-1 thrashing of Newcastle United. Their star Teemu Pukki, who has tallied four goals in two Premier League matches, would score all three against the Magpies to achieve the hat-trick, and he’s not expected to stop his success against the Blues.

Norwich City is nearly unbeatable at home, so needless to say, this is going to be a very tough win to grab for Chelsea, especially with how lowly they’ve been playing. Things are going so well for the Canaries right now, that they may even upset the Blues to achieve a victory.

For Frank Lampard, Christian Pulisic and the rest of Chelsea, they would get hammered by a 4-0 tally to Manchester United to begin the season, and then they would drop two points in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City in Matchday 2. With Lampard depending on a youth movement due to a transfer ban, the struggles could continue this weekend with Chelsea, plus, Teemu Pukki is just too hot right now. I don’t have the Blues getting upset, but give me a draw.

BETTING PREDICTION: Norwich City 1, Chelsea 1

Brighton & Hove Albion (+145) vs. Southampton (+215) (Draw: +230) (O/U: 2.5)

  • (Saturday, August 24, 10:00 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSG)

ANALYSIS: With the match being hosted at American Express Community Stadium, you can expect a very entertaining game between Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

For the Seagulls, they would begin their season in fantastic fashion, blasting Brighton for a 3-0 road victory over Watford at Vicarage Road. In Matchday 2, they would then earn another point after drawing 1-1 with West Ham United.

This weekend with Matchday 3, Albion faces off against Southampton. With the Seagulls being extra motivated to get their first home win of the season, and the Saints being in terrible form at the moment, the chances are extremely high that Brighton & Hove Albion will be your victors in this match.

As far as Southampton is concerned, they’re lucky to even be in the English Premier League — they would barely avoid relegation to narrowly stay out of the EFL Championship. Coming into the new season, those struggles have stayed with the Saints. The defense has been horrendous, particularly at the back in a 3-0 blowout defeat to Burnley. I don’t expect that to get any better this weekend, give me the Seagulls by a goal.

BETTING PREDICTION: Brighton & Hove Albion 2, Southampton 1

Manchester United (-274) vs. Crystal Palace (+868) (Draw: +418) (O/U: 2.5)

  • (Saturday, August 24, 10:00 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSN, Universo)

ANALYSIS: Manchester United returns home this weekend to Old Trafford to square off against Crystal Palace, and to try to avenge their blown victory against Wolverhampton on Monday.

In Matchday 1, the Red Devils were absolutely magnificent with a 4-0 conquering of Chelsea, and despite the draw with Wolves, the fan base is still overall positive as the season continues. And now they’ll see what Man United can do against the Eagles. In the offseason, MUFC didn’t do too much for improvement other than a move here and there, but with that being said, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will still get his choice from world-class players to bring in — the Devils will be better this season, this is just one edition of the 2019-20 team.

For Crystal Palace, they’ve gotten off to a bit of a rocky start to kick off the season. As a matter of fact, the Glaziers haven’t even scored a goal yet in the new campaign. In their opening match, they would gain just a point with a 0-0 draw with Everton and then would turn around to lose 1-0 to Sheffield United, a team who was just promoted this season into the English Premier League.

Their defense hasn’t been bad, but the offense has for Crystal Palace. Manchester United is currently sitting at 33% form, but I expect that to increase this weekend. They can score, especially at Old Trafford, it’s just the away game at Wolverhampton, they always struggle in that scenario — I personally would crank their form up a bit higher. Expect a much better performance from the Red Devils this weekend, and with a win in clean-sheet fashion. Give me United to dominate.

BETTING PREDICTION: Manchester United 3, Crystal Palace 0

Sheffield United (+251) vs. Leicester City (+128) (Draw: +230) (O/U: 2)

  • (Saturday, August 24, 10:00 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSG)

ANALYSIS: Expect a potential sell-out crowd at Bramall Lane this weekend as Sheffield United and Leicester City face each other for Matchday 3.

Since the Blades have arrived into the English Premier League, they’ve put up solid performances grabbing four out of six total points in the first two weeks of the season — and this despite most expecting them to be relegated. In their first home match of the campaign, they would face off against Crystal Palace and make the fan base ecstatic after a 1-0 win. Now, with Leicester City at Bramall Lane this weekend, the confidence is sky-high from the fans that the hot stretch will continue.

For the Foxes, it’s been two matches and two draws. In Matchday 1, it would be a 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton, and then the following weekend would bring a 1-1 draw with Chelsea. If Leicester City can accomplish that same feat against Sheffield United in Matchday 3, the trip will be considered a success by the club, and this is because of how tough the Blades are at their house. Keep an eye on James Maddison, who could potentially help out with a draw against the Blades, maybe even a victory if Leicester’s potency is just right.

I personally have a very competitive and intense game between Sheffield United and Leicester City, and have the Foxes exceeding their goals with a victory, but it obviously won’t come easy. Entertaining game, with Leicester City taking a one-score win.

BETTING PREDICTION: Leicester City 2, Sheffield United 1

Watford (+111) vs. West Ham United (+280) (Draw: +250) (O/U: 2.5)

  • (Saturday, August 24, 10:00 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSG)

ANALYSIS: This weekend at Vicarage Road, we have an interesting matchup between Watford and West Ham United, two clubs who have yet to achieve a victory in the new English Premier League season. You would think that something may give in this match, but the chances are extremely high that it ends up in a very competitive draw — get your popcorn for this one.

After a blowout 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Hornets would then take another defeat in Matchday 2 losing 1-0 at Everton. With that being said, the lack of momentum, form, as well as confidence could create problems for Watford this weekend. With the circumstances, they’re in a fortunate situation to have home ground advantage in this match while they’re still working out the kinks.

As far as the Hammers are concerned, they were absolutely horrendous on the defensive side of the ball in a 5-0 thrashing they suffered to power Manchester City. In Matchday 2, they would recover quite well with a solid 1-1 draw on the road against Brighton & Hove Albion. With that being said, they’re still getting stuff together as well like Watford.

You can expect both teams to be aggressive this weekend and to go for a victory rather than a draw, especially considering neither club has one. With that kind of vibe and atmosphere going in, you can expect some good scoring from each Watford and West Ham United this weekend. I think there’s a lot of value on intensity in this match, and I’ll take a draw with two goals from each club as a result, and both still looking for their first win.

BETTING PREDICTION: BETTING PREDICTION: Watford 2, West Ham United 2

Liverpool (-192) vs. Arsenal (+520) (Draw: +395) (O/U: 3.5)

  • (Match of the Week) (Saturday, August 24, 12:30 PM ET) (Tv: NBC, Universo)

ANALYSIS: And here we have our match of the week, a heavyweight contest between Liverpool and Arsenal at the Reds’ Anfield — both clubs come in with an undefeated 2-0-0.

For Liverpool, they look to continue their momentum after repeat wins over Norwich City and Southampton, and that’s not the only thing they plan on continuing. With how successful their aggressive attacking style has been, you can expect the Reds to keep up that tempo of play heading into this weekend. Sadio Mane began his goal-scoring with a ball in the net in the 2-1 victory at Southampton, so expect him to be in the game plan a bit more for Liverpool in Matchday 3.

Like the Reds, the Gunners have been playing some beautiful football to start out the season, also getting back-to-back victories to start out 2-0-0 — their wins would come over Newcastle United and Burnley. But now they’re tasked with the defending UEFA Champions League title winner Liverpool, the club who also finished second in the Premier League last season. Needless to say, this is a different animal.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had a fantastic start to the 2019-20 campaign, hitting two goals to begin the season, so expect him to be fully implemented against the Reds. With that being said, I think they make it competitive, especially after Liverpool got exposed a little bit against Southampton. As far as beating them though, I just think the Reds are on another level. Gunners make it a thoroughbred thriller, but I have to ride with Liverpool by a goal in a high-scoring affair.

BETTING PREDICTION: Liverpool 3, Arsenal 2

AFC Bournemouth (+1200) vs. Manchester City (-500) (Draw: +550) (O/U: 3.5)

  • (Sunday, August 25, 9:00 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSN)

ANALYSIS: They would dominate their match against Tottenham Hotspur in Matchday 2, but VAR would decline Manchester City from getting a victory. This weekend, they travel on the road to Vitality Stadium to take on AFC Bournemouth in hopes of returning to a winning form.

The Citizens would have absolutely no luck in their game against Spurs. Not only would VAR take a goal from them, but Man City would only get two goals out of their 30+ shot attempts. Luck just wasn’t on their side at all, and as a result, the Sky Blues would have to settle for a 2-2 draw with Tottenham and just a point to add to their table total. Despite that, however, City is sure to stick to their game plan of aggressive attacking, so don’t expect any major changes against Bournemouth this weekend — it won’t be an easy match against the Cherries though.

Speaking of AFC Bournemouth, they’re coming into Matchday 3 with momentum after a 2-1 road victory over Aston Villa, and on top of that, the Cherries are tough to beat on their home ground.

Manchester City should grab the win because of their power, there’s no doubt about that, but Bournemouth will definitely make it tough on MCFC throughout. Expect an entertaining game, but with a Sky Blues victory by two goals.

BETTING PREDICTION: Manchester City 3, AFC Bournemouth 1

Tottenham Hotspur (-370) vs. Newcastle United (+1100) (Draw: +565) (O/U: 3)

  • (Sunday, August 25, 11:30 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSN, Telemundo)

ANALYSIS: After achieving a 2-2 draw at Manchester City to take a point back home to London, Tottenham Hotspur will be aiming to return to winning form this weekend as they host Newcastle United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Not only are Spurs a power in the Premier League, but they’re also incredibly tough to beat on their home ground. Not just that, but Newcastle United are candidates to be relegated at the end of the campaign and be put back into the EFL Championship. You have to think Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur will roll in this one. In Matchday 1, Tottenham would have to pull a comeback in order to achieve a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, but once they were in the lead, they were in control throughout in that home contest — yet another reason to take Spurs at home.

For the Magpies, they’ve gotten off to a dismal start to begin the 2019-20 English Premier League season. To open things up, they would take a 1-0 loss to Arsenal after blowing their opportunity for a draw, and then they would get hammered in a 3-1 loss to Norwich City. Needless to say, they have zero chance to win in London.

Spurs should get a easy win this weekend, I have them winning by three goals and in clean sheet fashion in a dominating performance. No contest here, folks.

BETTING PREDICTION: Tottenham Hotspur 3, Newcastle United 0

Wolverhampton (-116) vs. Burnley (+395) (Draw: +255) (O/U: 2)

  • (Sunday, August 25, 11:30 AM ET) (Tv: NBCSG)

ANALYSIS: Molineux Stadium will play host to the Matchday 3 derby between Wolverhampton and Burnley, and if we learned anything in the Manchester United contest, Wolves are incredibly tough to beat at home. It makes it even worse considering the Clarets have the complete opposite aspiration of the Wanderers, meaning Wolves are looking for a spot in a European competition, while Burnley is just looking to stay in the Premier League. Wolverhampton should roll.

Going back to Molineux Stadium, the Wanderers have been an absolute force on their home ground for years now. With the Clarets having a poor away resume, this match doesn’t bode well for Burnley. And honestly, the odds are completely stacked against the Clarets in this one, hence why Wolverhampton has such hefty -116 odds.

Wolves’ Raul Jimenez is sure to be in the game plan a lot this weekend, and he’ll be an absolute toxic threat to put the ball in Burnley’s net. On top of that, Wolverhampton’s defense should have the Clarets’ Ashley Barnes in check, and he’ll have limited effectiveness as a result after doing his thing in a 3-0 win over Southampton in Matchday 1. In other words, the Wanderers have all the weaponry to get a convincing victory in this one.

In the last meeting between the two clubs at Molineux, Wolverhampton would secure a 1-0 win over Burnley with Jimenez tallying the only goal. With Wolves being a bit stronger this year, and the Clarets being on the weaker side. Give me Wolverhampton by two.

BETTING PREDICTION: Wolverhampton 2, Burnley 0
