3 Ways to Know Your Team is Winning in League of Legends

Nearly all MOBAs are built so that each team has a chance at winning, even if they are losing. That being said, it can be a very back-and-forth game that can be stressful for the viewers, especially if there’s money on the line.

For bettors, there can be a lot of risk to picking a team, especially if you lose out on the winnings and no one wants that. So when it looks like your team might be losing, the thought of putting your money on the other team might come across your head.

But don’t! Sometimes, keeping your money on your original pick is the best choice and here’s why. League of Legends is a very back-and-forth game, meaning that one smart move by a team can result in them taking the momentum.

The same goes for a bad move. One wrong move and that team could lose all their momentum within seconds. League of Legends is so fast-paced that one team could be winning for the first five minutes and then lose for the next ten minutes.

So how can you tell if your team is winning? There are many ways you can tell but these are the very fundamentals of discerning if your team is going to be able to win the entire match. Here are three major ways you can tell if your team is winning in League of Legends.

What Causes a Team to Lose in the First Place?

There are many factors which can cause a team to lose but the most important pieces are a poor laning phase, no regard for objectives, and a lack of team unity. These three teams show up every single time a team loses.

Poor Laning Phase=Poor Game in General

The laning phase is the beginning of every League of Legends match, whether it’s recreational or competitive. You play the laning phase well and you end up having the lead over your opponent in the mid game.

Therefore, winning the laning phase is a direct entrance into winning the mid game. It’s a domino effect. In order to win the fights in the mid game, you must first win the fights in the early game. You can’t win one without the other.

The players who tend to solo-kill their opponents more and accumulate a strong gold lead going into the mid game tend to have a bigger lead for the next phase of the game. That’s why you see professional players emphasize playing a safe early game, so that they don’t give away an unnecessary lead.

Instead, they let their jungler build that lead by looking for ganks and skirmishes that will help them later on. Always remember. The team that has the better laning phase always goes into the mid game with a better chance of winning.

Of course, there can be outside factors in play during the mid game such as a throw or a pick from an enemy team but when it comes down to the fundamentals, it’s always focused down on playing well during the early game.

Objectives Are Very Important!

In League of Legends, the word objectives is relative but it holds a large amount of importance inside the game. The reason being behind this is the fact that objectives are a catalyst to winning the game in all phases of the match—the early game, mid game, late game, objectives are important at every single phase of the game.

The reason that objectives are so important is because objectives give some type of buff to each team. For example, securing a dragon can give extra stats such as attack damage and ability power or it can extra damage to enemy turrets.

Securing a Baron Nashor could mean extra AD and AP stats all around as well as empowered recalls. Other objectives such as towers and inhibitors open up more of the map for you to play around. So, therefore, as you can see, objectives play a huge role in helping you win a match.

They can help you win a team fight. They can help you break into the enemy’s base. They can do virtually everything. Objectives are key to a team winning and the team that secures less of these objectives tends to have a disadvantage in team fights.

They also usually have less to work with on the map so these teams end up unable to pick their fights. As you can see, without objectives, most teams find themselves facing defeat. Objectives are the backbone of every winning team and they’re going to stay that way as long as League of Legends exists.

No Team Unity Means No Team

If a team can’t stay together in League of Legends, then they’re going to find it hard to even find any success getting the right chance to win a team fight. A disorganized team is a formula for defeat in any circumstance.

Without any team unity, you aren’t going to be able to coordinate team fights or grab objectives. Essentially, you’re a sitting duck and the only thing standing between your team and defeat is the decision as to when the opposing team wants to take you out.

When you’re disorganized, you’re going to die in the early game, you’re going to get picked off in the mid game, and you’re going to lose in the late game. There’s nearly no chance for a disorganized team to win. Period.

How to Tell If Your Team is Winning

A team can be considered “winning” in many circumstances but I can guarantee that your team isn’t truly winning unless they’re doing one of these three things during a match. Without these three things, your team truly isn’t winning.

One of the Carries is Ahead

A carry in League of Legends is the player mainly associated with making sure the team wins the match. What I mean by this is the fact that a carry is responsible for a large part of the damage outputted for their team.

A normal carry in League of Legend is usually the mid laner or AD Carry. However, this role can also be extended to the top lane and the jungler. For example, a typical top lane carry could be someone like Fiora or Camille.

In the jungle, a carry could be someone like Nidalee, Elise, or Graves. Without your carry ahead, the chance of your team winning is slim to none. So, in order for a carry to be ahead, they need to have a substantial amount of gold and they also need to reflect this in their KDA.

To have a substantial amount of gold, they need to at least have around more than seventy CS by the ten minute mark. As for their KDA, they need to be able to reflect a KDA that has more kills and assists than deaths.

More deaths is a red flag and indicates that that particular carry won’t be as effective as they could have been. By having a carry that is ahead, your carry is essentially reflecting the success of your team in their ability to hold the early game and make successful moves towards the mid game.

Even if the team has one or two players that is behind in some way, as long as the team has one carry that is ahead, that team did something right and they still have a shot to win. Remember. A carry is the one most responsible in helping their team get the victory. As long as they’re ahead, the team has a chance.

Your Team Has More Objectives

As I’ve said before, the word objectives is fairly relative in League of Legends. It can refer to a small wolf camp during the early game or it can refer to the Elder Dragon during the late game. An objective is what the game makes it during that phase of the game.

However, in this case, the objectives I’m referring to are the big ones. They’re the ones that fights are built around. They’re the ones that make or break a team. I’m referring to dragons, Baron Nashor, and towers/inhibitors.

The team that has more tends to indicate that they’re winning the match since towers show which team has more of the map opened up to them and dragons and Baron Nashor show which team has a better chance of winning the team fight.

Therefore, objectives say a lot about a team. A team that has more dragons tends to say that that team will have a higher chance at winning the big team fights since they’ll have the better stats. They’ll also have better utility for out of fight purposes—movement speed, regeneration, true damage on turrets etc.

As for turrets, they’re a very good indicator for which team had the better mid to late game. On average, the team that takes the first turret ends up winning the game since they open up the map first. This gives them more opportunities to attack their opponent’s weaker points and look to expose them even more.

If team A has three towers compared to team B’s two towers, then there’s a very good chance that team A will have more to work with. They’ll have more lanes to work with and that means that if they want to start a team fight, they can do it and team B is going to be at a disadvantage when it comes down to it.

There are loopholes to this, though. If the objectives are tied, then you can’t always look at this. Instead, you’ll want to look at who’s winning the team fights—which I’ll get to later—and which lanes seem to be more important.

However, nine times out of ten, this won’t be the case. Usually, you’ll be able to tell that one team has a lead over the others through objectives, whether this is dragons, Baron Nashor, or turrets and inhibitors. Each one can show you which team has the lead.

They’re Winning the Team Fights

A large component of League of Legends is fighting. You want to fight in order to get pockets of time where you can get free things like a dragon or a Baron Nashor or maybe even an inhibitor. But in order to do that, you must first be able to win the fight.

In a close game, you can see both teams winning the team fights back and forth but whenever the tide starts to turn, you’re going to see one team start winning more team fights than the other. And they don’t always have to be team fights either. They can sometimes be skirmishes and picks.

But in the end, the team that is winning more team fights, skirmishes, or picks tends to be the team that closes out the game with a victory. As I’ve said before, winning a team fight gives you a window of opportunity to make a push for the enemy team’s Nexus.

The more team fights you win, the more opportunities you get. But a won team fight also shows that your team either has the better positioning and mechanics or that your team has the better items or team composition.

Either way, the team fight can only have one victor and if your team is winning more and more team fights or constantly getting more picks than the other team, then that means that they’re definitely going to get a chance to take down that Nexus.

What If It Looks Like My Team Isn’t Going to Win?

Don’t fret! Sometimes, it takes a while to know if your team is going to have a shot at winning. Comebacks are always possible. For example, in the 2018 EU LCS Spring Split Giants and H2K Gaming went head-to-head and H2K Gaming pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Split.

For the majority of the match, H2K had their backs against the wall as the Giants were calling the shots. They were securing the objectives, winning the team fights, and had the better players. Overall, they seemed unstoppable.

However, at the end of it, H2K still pulled out the win. Despite having an open Nexus and an extremely fed Kalista that could single-handedly take down the entire H2K roster, H2K Gaming’s roster of scrappy individuals still managed to find a way to win and the signs were there.

After about the thirtieth minute, H2K Gaming started winning more team fights largely thanks to the contributions of their AD Carry, Sheriff. Then, they managed to secure a Baron Nashor. That doesn’t mean that the Giants had their own moments too.

At one point, they were on H2K Gaming’s Nexus, about to close out the game but H2K’s Sheriff went to town, obliterating four of them before letting their mid laner, Selfie, charge down the top lane and end the game.

Even when all hope seemed lost, H2K Gaming still managed to come back and when the game in the late game because they had the three fundamentals. They were winning more team fights at one point and this allowed them opportunities to grab objectives that Giants missed out on.

Throughout the match, despite being down eighty percent of the game, they still had their carry, Sheriff, to depend on and he ended up being a huge asset in the end. They showed all three signs that they could win and the bettors who stuck through were paid very well for their faith.

Now, does this mean this will happen every time? Of course not! There are several factors you have to put into play before you can actually consider whether a team can come back from such a large deficit. In H2K Gaming’s case, they got extremely lucky in the end.

Their AD Carry, Sheriff, managed to 1v4 the Giants team when it mattered the most and afterwards, they were lucky enough to score an opportunity to end the game because they had a large wave in the top lane that their mid laner, Selfie, could teleport to in order to end it all.

But they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so if they didn’t follow those three steps. They made sure that Sheriff was strong enough to perform when they needed him to and he did without hesitation. They secured enough objectives to open the map and give themselves some chance of winning the game and finally, they were winning team fights and picks.

Not only did this make the Giants roster nervous, it gave them gold and time to recuperate and get ready to launch their own counter-attack. These are the fundamentals to making sure that you can come back and something that you as a bettor should always look out for.

Your team might not be performing well right now. They might’ve performed poorly all throughout the entire game. But I promise you that it’s never over till it’s over. At every single point in the game, your team has a shot at winning.

The early and mid game are up for grabs most of the team, even if your team is behind. Now, if you want to switch up and bet on the other team, that’s also a respectable move to cut your losses. But just remember. You’re never out till one team destroys the Nexus.

Conclusion
As a bettor, I know it can be extremely stressful to bet on a particular team but not receive the results you hoped for…at least for the time being. You never know if your team is going to win or lose till one Nexus is destroyed and in that time, a lot can happen.

Your team might be able to pull off a comeback or they might finally get the edge against an opponent they were going head-to-head with for the entire early to mid game. It’s a very stressful process but if you look for three particular things, this stress will disappear almost entirely.

If your team has some type of carry that’s holding the team down—such as a mid laner or an AD Carry—your team definitely has a chance to win skirmishes and team fights. If your team is winning these team fights more frequently than the other team, then those are good signs and finally, if your team has secured more objectives, then that’s the perfect sign that your team has been doing well.

These three things combined go to pave a pathway for your team to take their shot at victory. All they have to do is take chance. However, all three things must work together. You cannot have all a strong carry and objectives but not win team fights.

You can’t secure objectives but lose team fights and not have a carry. All three need to work together in order to secure a strong chance at winning the game. Betting in League of Legends can be extremely intense since everything can become so fast-paced in such a short amount of time.

But by looking for these three things, you’ll know which team will have the highest shot at winning the match and that’s what’s most important. As a bettor, your goal is to win and this is just one more tip in helping you find a better strategy in making your fortune.
