Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers 07/05/2022 MLB Preview

The Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers play Game 2 of a three-game set between these division rivals at Dodger Stadium.

Los Angeles defeated Colorado 5-3 on Monday night in the series opener. With the loss, the Rockies are now 35-45 on the season and at the bottom of the NL West team standings. Colorado is 5-5 in its last 10 games played and they are 8 games off the race for the 2nd wild card spot in the National League.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles is on top of the division with its NL West with their 50-29 record. The Dodgers are 4.5 games ahead of the Padres and are 6-4 in their last 10 games played. Los Angeles has the third-best record in baseball but is 8 games behind the Yankees. The Dodgers are neck-to-neck with the New York Mets for the best record in the National League. L.A. is currently one-half game on top of New York atop the NL.

Colorado Rockies

After beating the Dodgers 2-1 last week, the Rockies won Games 2 and 3 against the Diamondbacks to win another series at 2-1. Unfortunately, the Rockies were beaten 5-3 by the Dodgers on Monday night in the series opener. Jose Iglesias and C.J. Crohn homered for Colorado but the Dodgers banked on a four-run 5th inning to pick up the home win.

German Marquez will open on top of the mound in Game 2. The 27-year-old right-hander is 4-6 with an ERA of 5.89 and a WHIP of 1.54 in a total of 15 starts this season. Marquez has allowed 55 earned runs on 97 hits with 15 home runs, 70 strikeouts, and 32 walks in a total of 84.0 innings pitched.

In his last start, Marquez lasted just 3.1 innings while allowing five earned runs on five hits during an 8-4 loss to the Dodgers last week. The Rockies are 5-1 in Marquez’s last six starts.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are looking to return the favor on the Rockies who beat them 2-1 in their three-game set last week. Los Angeles picked up its 50th win of the season on Monday by defeating the Rockies 5-3 on Monday night in a win that gave them a one-half lead in the league standings. Los Angeles is also 4.5 games up on the Padres in the division race.

Mitch White will get his seventh start of the season on Tuesday. The 27-year-old right-hander is 1-1 with an ERA of 3.93 and a WHIP of 1.19 this season. In a total of 34.1 innings pitched this season, White has conceded 5 earned runs on 30 hits with 33 strikeouts and 11 walks in a total of 34.1 innings pitched.

White threw for 4.1 innings and allowed only one earned run on six hits during a 3-1 win over the Padres. He did not factor in the decision in that game. The Dodgers are 4-3 in games where White has appeared this season.

The Dodgers dropped two of three to the Rockies last week but that set was played in Colorado where the Rockies have hit the ball much better. On the road, it’s a different story as they have hit just .238 while scoring only 106 total runs. German Marquez has an ERA of 5.23 and is 0-1 in two starts against the Dodgers this season, giving up six earned runs with two home runs in 10.1 innings pitched.

The Los Angeles offense which ranked 7th overall in batting average, 1st in OBP, 4th in slugging, and second in runs scored should be able to put up enough runs against Marquez to win this game. Meanwhile, Mitch White should be able to give the Dodgers five innings before turning the ball over to the 7th best bullpen in the majors which has an ERA of 3.33.

The Dodgers’ bats should be too much for the 2022 version of Marquez while the bullpen is going to provide White enough help to get the win in Game 2. If White can be steady here, the Dodgers could be a nice find at -110 at the run line (-1.5). But to be sure, just go with L.A. at the Moneyline.

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers

These teams have combined to score an average of 9.4 runs per game in their last 10 head-to-head meetings and 9 runs per game in their last series. The Dodgers are no. 2 in the league in scoring runs while the Rockies are in the upper half at no. 13 and lead the league in batting average.

The over is 15-12-1 when the Dodgers play the NL at home and the over is 15-11 when the Rockies play the NL on the road. The Rockies have gone over 8.5 runs in six out of their last six games played while the Dodgers have scored 25 runs in their last five games played. Both these offenses can get hot quickly, especially the Dodgers. Given Marquez’s troubles this season and the Dodgers’ success with right-handers this season, I like these teams to hit the over.

Prediction: Over 8.5
